Respond to the following scenario using the knowledge you have gained from reading Functional Area 5: Cognitive.
A volunteer who is a retired kindergarten teacher is insistent that the teachers and children follow her way of doing things. She brings in tracing pictures for the children to color, "ditto sheets" for them to choose the right answer, and scolds the children when they are not quiet enough or polite enough for her. The staff has tried different ways to get her to change, but nothing seems to work. What would you do?
I would thank the retired teacher for her efforts. Then in a polite way ask her to not bring in any resources instead use what the school provided .
I would also encourage her to use a more peaceful tone when addressing the children , as this communicates our desire for an atmosphere of acceptance and respect . Always remember that they are still learning.
I would try to encourage the volunteer to allow the children to learn and explore more naturally, in ways that gives the students the ability to be expressive, free, and inquisitive. Instead of the tracing sheets she can model writing and graphics so they can be independent. Ask questions and allow the students to raise their hand to respond or think, pair share with a partner ( in place of the multiple choice.
If that doesn't work, I will have a conversation with her about how teaching and learning has changed over the years. Some things that were acceptable then aren't now and new studies, strategies, and learning experiences have changedbwhich subsequently made teaching change throughout the years.
