Respond to the following scenario using the knowledge you have gained from reading Functional Area 6: Communication.
A few parents have approached the teacher and are threatening to post a complaint video on TIKTOK against the school for including Spanish-speaking activities in a predominantly English-speaking classroom. The parents feel that all the children should learn in English only and that including even a little bit of Spanish in the classroom will confuse the students and hinder their ability to learn. What would you do?
I would reassure the parents that we understand that they and their children are valued that their home language is respected. However in introducing a second language it opens up opportunities for them to connect with people from all over the world.
It is also said that this may enhance one's listening skills and memory. I would also look into having a workshop that will seek to educate the parents on the importance and benefits of introducing a second language.
I would speak to the parent about their concerns with the director, family worker about the importance of language and multiculturalism. I will express that although I may have a class of predominantly English learners, teaching students words and phrases in another language broadens their vocabulary and makes Esl learners feel included.
