Respond to the following scenario using the knowledge you have gained from reading Functional Area 9: Social.
Miguel, a new child in your classroom, is Latinx. He is having trouble getting along with the other children in the classroom. When they do not let him enter their play group, Miguel becomes very aggressive. After a particular incident, Miguel's teacher made him sit in the quiet corner. Miguel tells his mother about the quiet corner, and when the teacher talks to Miguel's mother about his aggressive behavior in the classroom, the mother becomes very upset. She writes a negative review of the teacher and the school on Google saying that you are racist and you treat her son differently from the other students in the classroom. If you were Miguel's teacher, what would you do?
I will invite the parent to a meeting with the director, family worker, and instructional coach. I would assure the parent that it may seem like her child is singled out but this can be mistaken because the child may feel lonely due to his inability to communicate in English. I would incorporate more of Miguel's native language in the class. I can encourage the students to use the new vocabulary to each other and to Miguel. I will use visuals to support Miguel when he is trying to talk to his peers and teach him words and phrases.
