Respond to the following scenario using the knowledge you have gained from reading Functional Area 10: Guidance.
Tara, a new teacher in your center, is having difficulty with two children in her class. They are always fighting, taking things from one another, and telling on each other. Tara has taken points from them on ClassDojo, put them on time-out on the playground, and excluded them from a class birthday party. The children have told their parents how Tara has disciplined them, and these parents have complained to the school director. Since you are a veteran teacher, the director has paired Tara with you and asked you to help her learn to manage her students and classroom. What words of wisdom do you have for Tara about how to handle hard-to-handle preschoolers?
Hard to handle preschoolers can really test your patience as a teacher, and make it difficult to plan around students that trigger each other. I would encourage Tara to keep the two students separate by regrouping them to minimize tension. I would also ask her to think about each child's strengths and praise them on the things they are doing right and highlight the positive. Giving the students jobs will also keep them busy of making the wrong choices and keep them from being idle and causing trouble.
